These stories were written from the perspective of the protagonist in the set, a dog who lived a succession of different lives. The author did an excellent job of characterizing how a dog might think - simple, loving, completely devoted to his "humans". The set was recommended to me by a friend and after I read the series, I have given the books to several of my dog-loving friends who also very much enjoyed both books.
What a great author. Life through the eyes of a dog. What sensitivity and creativity to show the dogs mind as he passes through life's difficult mazes and non-verbal communication. Bruce really understands his subject and what love he shares. I cried and laughed, as did my sister (who warned me, when she read it first) and roommate (Who wanted to toss the book after the first death). We all just bonded with the dog sooooo much. We all (three of us) loved this book and are now reading all Bruce Cameron's other books.This is a lovely find for animal (dog) LOVERS
Cameron's books follow a single dog, starting when its first owner is seven or so, through a series of reincarnations to find certain owners, the last one being to rejoin the first owner's granddaughter well over one hundred fifty years later when she is in her seventies. The actual time period is never specified. The lapses between the meetings may be ten years, or they may be fifty years. The owners and their family members die, the dogs die. Through it all the dog, in its various incarnations of both sexes and various breeds, believes that its job is to look after primarily two owners, Ethan and his granddaughter, CJ. As events unfold, the dog's understanding of its true purpose through all these lives changes and shifts. The several death scenes in the novels are handled in a rather straightforward, non melodramatic manner, so that the reader is saddened, but not manipulated into crying and sobbing, because the results are a growing understanding by the dog of why it is here and why it keeps returning. The finale is a delight, although a bit bittersweet. Well worth the time.The book deals with a number of topics, such as uncaring parents, bullying, cancer, eating diorders, cancer, and the choice to end medical treatment because the character believes in the Death with Dignity movement. However, while sad, the maudlin is strictly avoided.
Beautiful stories! I highly recommend for any dog lovers. I gave this box set as a gift to a friend, I also bought just the 1st book, A Dog's Purpose, for my brother. The 2nd book is a bit more targeted towards a female audience (IMO) but the 1st book works well for a male or female reader. I loved them both!
I fell in love with the movie preview and knew that I needed to read the book. Imagine my happiness when I learned that there was two books instead of just one! While the books may be a bit juvenile for my typical literary selection, they are endearing and relatable. The author kept chapters short (perfect for breaking the read up over several nights) and kept the story line stable even while varying the context and tone of the message. I found both of these books to be a page turner!
Wonderful books! I absolutely loved these books and I have recommended them to many friends and family members. They are stories I'll never forget! They made me laugh out loud and they even made me cry a few times too. Very touching stories and I loved the way they were written. I don't think any dog lover would be disappointed in these books. I loved that the books were written from a dog's perspective. A unique read and two books you truly won't want to put down!
I'll tell you, this was a tear jerker. The premise of the same dog being born over and over with memories of its previous lives is pretty silly, but it was a fine book to read.
I read these books on my iPad and loved them so much that I purchased this boxed set as a gift for my brother. Anyone who has ever owned a good dog will absolutely love these books. Well written, funny and tender, it was an easy read and hard to put down. Makes one want to hug their pooch and let them know that they are a "good dog". Be ready for the tears! Plus a lot of laughs. It's also a great gift for a dog lover!
