I have been making my own soaps and creams for years now but always like to see what's new. While the recipes in here are very good, there is nothing new if you are experienced at making creams and lotions. If you have never made lotion before, this would be THE book to get. My favorite one is out of print and I have not seen it sold anywhere.This book is strictly for making body lotions. No creams or facial products. If you have ever gone to any lotion crafting websites then you will be familiar with all of the ingredients in here. If this is your first time making lotion, Anne describes everything that you will need and why.That said, you will need a gram scale since they are more accurate and, while the ounces are also given in each recipe, using grams is actually easier. You'll also need to find some e-wax since all but one of the recipes use it. No substitutions are given. I like to use xanthan gum but it tends to make a sticky product. It also happens to be easier to find locally.Other ingredients that you may need that recipes use are stearic acid, vitamin E, preservative, and conditioning emulsifier, which is also called BTMS. And then there are oils and butters, which should be easy to find. There are a couple of recipes that call for goat's milk and one that uses almond milk. Of course, you could substitute milk for the water in any of the recipes. I made a goat's milk lotion one time and it was incredibly thick. Be aware that adding milk will do that.Getting lotion into bottles presents its own challenge, which Anne is up for. Follow her directions and you will be bottling lotion like a pro. I use wide-mouthed small jars but I don't sell my lotions and creams. Everybody in the house gets their own jar.If you want to make your own recipes, Anne covers that in detail. She also tells you what to do if you want to start your own lotion-making business. And there is a trouble-shooting section. Finally, there is a list of suppliers in the back, which includes suppliers in several other countries besides the US. These are the most popular ones.If you want to make all-purpose body lotions, get this book. You truly will be making anything better than what you will find in a store.
I have used recipes from blogs to make lotion. Even though they would come out creamy, they didn't moisturize my skin. Since reading and following the recipes from this book, I finally made lotion that works for me and the family. Thank you Anne Watson!
Excellent book! Dispelled a few myths for me. I had made my first batch BEFORE reading this and while it was not a total failure, it had issues. It is useable, but nothing I would sell. Anne's books are phenomenal, everything you need to get started and beyond. Gives you confidence to broaden your horizons. I am a soap maker and have one of her books on that as well, same thing. Anne is a good writer, easy to follow and thorough. Highly recommend this book. Thank you Anne for a great publication.
I was so disappointed. I did exactly what the recipes said but didn't really get a thick cream lotion for hands. It's a thin, watery lotion. Fortunately, it was still usable and I loved the way the recipes made my face and hands feel. Twice on 2 different days I got exactly the same result. I tried to research and do things differently the second time to be sure I hadn't made a mistake the first time, but I got the exact same result.
Great book for the beginner. There is quite a bit of information given which is easy to read and understand. There are a variety of good recipes for lotions, body butters and scrubs and I was impressed that preservatives are recommended as many of the other books I've purchased do not include the use of preservatives.
I made my first batch of lotion using the Almond Lotion recipe in the book. Anne made this so freakin' easy, it was scary. The hardest part was me triple checking everything to make sure I was doing it right. i just wish I had stumbled on this book earlier.Pros:Very easy to followVery good commonsense tipsLots of recipesRecommendations for where to get suppliesThe recipes contain more oil than commercial lotions which probably means you'll get the 24hr moisturizing the others promise.Cons:A little expensive just starting out. I had to order almost everything so shipping costs were high but this will pay for itself in no time. Not a fault of the author though.Alternative preservatives are mentioned, but no real information on them. It's quite daunting to find good information due to the abundance of info on the internet.I highly recommend this book and I can't wait to start in on the other recipes.UPDATE!I've been making these recipes for me and my family. My girls are really not on board with natural products but they both prefer the homemade lotions. I am very pleased with this book and don't see any need for a different book. The recipes are easy and I've never had a problem with any of them. I've seen other do-it-yourself lotion recipes but they don't seem to worry about sanitation. I've had a bottle in my purse for a few months and it shows no signs of spoilage. I still consider this to be one of my best purchases ever.
Anne Watson has done it again. Her books are always simple and clear. She has a way of giving all the information that is needed to make a quality product, whether it is soap or lotion yet never making the instructions intimidating. After reading this book, I was easily able to walk into the kitchen and make a quality lotion that I had control of the ingredients.I have tried several of the recipes in the book and they have all been fantastic. They worked and gave me a nice creamy lotion that when applied was absorbed into the skin in minutes and lasted all day. There is a section in the book on formulating your own recipes and I have done that also. Anne makes herself available by email to answer any questions that might come up along the way. Now where do you get that kind of help?If you want to have control of the ingredients in the lotion you use and and make a yummy lotion, then this is the book for you.
