Excellent and well written account of many Marian apparitions that have occurred in the last 150 years. The focus is on Medjugorje, but that alleged apparition site propels forward the discussion of other sites - approved, such as Lourdes and Fatima and unapproved, like Garabandal and Gianna Sullivan in Maryland. The writing on all the sites was objective and fair; there was no bias since the author seemed to be coming from a completely fresh and unsullied place, never having heard of the historical lore. I thoroughly enjoyed his dialogue with the (now) late Fr. Benedict Groeschel, whose wisdom, humor and down to earth "truthiness" wrapped all the apparition stories up like a bow for me.The author's narrative of his personal journey of faith was extraordinary but very real and very compelling. I wound up aching for him throughout his struggle and was moved to pray for him. I highly recommend this book.

I have bought copies for myself and also for gifts--it is profoundly spiritual without being dogmatic, searching and intellectual without being dismissive of the real experiences of faith. It does not answer questions so much as it raises wonder--this is a one-of-a-kind exploration of a world that exists--although the author never pretends to know for sure what it is. The social observer and commentator Roger Welsch ("Postcards from Nebraska") says he belongs to, "The Church of There's Something Going on Here"). After reading this book you may become a member as well.
This is the story of a Pulitzer Prize winning writer who wrote for Rolling Stone and Gentleman's Weekly, as well as multiple books. He read a story about some ghostly apparition in Oregon. I will be looking for them when I go. I know many of their deepest secrets. There are surprises and this is just beautifully written, filled with history. He describes the conditions about scenery and climate with words that bring you there with him. A book to pass on.

Randall Sullivan, whose previous book investigated the murders of rappers Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls at first seems as unlikely a candidate as Tony Hendra to write a passionate exploration of Catholic faith but is just as welcome.We need more guys like these: Successful popular culture figures willing to break through the limitations of that mold and speak from their hearts about their faith without descending into the new age babble so prevalent in the spiritual-zone of our pop culture. Do these two books mark the start of a trend? I hope so.Incidentally, these books motivated me to pick up Thomas Merton's The Seven Storey Mountain, another Catholic faith journey from an unlikely seeker.
