These stories were written from the perspective of the protagonist in the set, a dog who lived a succession of different lives. The author did an excellent job of characterizing how a dog might think - simple, loving, completely devoted to his "humans". The set was recommended to me by a friend and after I read the series, I have given the books to several of my dog-loving friends who also very much enjoyed both books.

What a great author. Life through the eyes of a dog. What sensitivity and creativity to show the dogs mind as he passes through life's difficult mazes and non-verbal communication. Bruce really understands his subject and what love he shares. I cried and laughed, as did my sister (who warned me, when she read it first) and roommate (Who wanted to toss the book after the first death). We all just bonded with the dog sooooo much. We all (three of us) loved this book and are now reading all Bruce Cameron's other books.This is a lovely find for animal (dog) LOVERS

Cameron's books follow a single dog, starting when its first owner is seven or so, through a series of reincarnations to find certain owners, the last one being to rejoin the first owner's granddaughter well over one hundred fifty years later when she is in her seventies. The actual time period is never specified. The lapses between the meetings may be ten years, or they may be fifty years. The owners and their family members die, the dogs die. Through it all the dog, in its various incarnations of both sexes and various breeds, believes that its job is to look after primarily two owners, Ethan and his granddaughter, CJ. As events unfold, the dog's understanding of its true purpose through all these lives changes and shifts. The several death scenes in the novels are handled in a rather straightforward, non melodramatic manner, so that the reader is saddened, but not manipulated into crying and sobbing, because the results are a growing understanding by the dog of why it is here and why it keeps returning. The finale is a delight, although a bit bittersweet. Well worth the time.The book deals with a number of topics, such as uncaring parents, bullying, cancer, eating diorders, cancer, and the choice to end medical treatment because the character believes in the Death with Dignity movement. However, while sad, the maudlin is strictly avoided.

Beautiful stories! I highly recommend for any dog lovers. I gave this box set as a gift to a friend, I also bought just the 1st book, A Dog's Purpose, for my brother. The 2nd book is a bit more targeted towards a female audience (IMO) but the 1st book works well for a male or female reader. I loved them both!

I fell in love with the movie preview and knew that I needed to read the book. Imagine my happiness when I learned that there was two books instead of just one! While the books may be a bit juvenile for my typical literary selection, they are endearing and relatable. The author kept chapters short (perfect for breaking the read up over several nights) and kept the story line stable even while varying the context and tone of the message. I found both of these books to be a page turner!

Wonderful books! I absolutely loved these books and I have recommended them to many friends and family members. They are stories I'll never forget! They made me laugh out loud and they even made me cry a few times too. Very touching stories and I loved the way they were written. I don't think any dog lover would be disappointed in these books. I loved that the books were written from a dog's perspective. A unique read and two books you truly won't want to put down!

I'll tell you, this was a tear jerker. The premise of the same dog being born over and over with memories of its previous lives is pretty silly, but it was a fine book to read.

I read these books on my iPad and loved them so much that I purchased this boxed set as a gift for my brother. Anyone who has ever owned a good dog will absolutely love these books. Well written, funny and tender, it was an easy read and hard to put down. Makes one want to hug their pooch and let them know that they are a "good dog". Be ready for the tears! Plus a lot of laughs. It's also a great gift for a dog lover!

The Smurfs Anthology Volume 1, which has the books "The Purple Smurfs", "The Smurf King" (a.k.a. "King Smurf"), and "The Smurfs And The Magic Flute" together in one collection, has the benefit of being in a larger-sized book similar to the original French editions of the Smurfs comic books, which makes for easier reading for older audiences. It contains commentary from Matt Murray and Jim Salicrup about Peyo and some of the stories in this collection, plus the original French covers for the books (although it's disconcerting that the cover for Les Schtroumpfs Noirs is used alongside its English translation "The Purple Smurfs", but it's understandable given the audience that the story is published for). Again the translations use the annoying "me, I don't like" that Papercutz seems to be consistent for using so far with Grouchy's lines which ruin the spirit of the character for English audiences who are so used to hearing him say "I hate" rather than "me, I don't like". (Imagine Grouchy in The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol shouting "me, I don't like hats" instead of "I...HATE...HATS!") Anyway, if you missed the first three Smurf books that Papercutz published or would just like them in bigger print, this is a must-get book for your collection.

The full size ipad screen works well as a means of enjoying the often small print and artwork of the comic strip medium. A larger computer or television screen might prove even more enjoyable. Any smaller screen than perhaps a 10" would have certainly been frustrating, if not impossible to allow the ability to read some of small print and enjoy some of the small comic strip windows.Peppermint - "all Daddy's should buy this book to read with their daughters."

This book is beautiful, and if you are a fan of The Smurfs, this gloriously inexpensive hardcover commemoration is for you. The art is beautiful and the concept art shown for each comic cover is superb to look at. The introductions written by a "Smurf expert" are very interesting, too. Peyo was no doubt an intelligent artist and his stories are structured as more than just kid's stories: they are written in a way that teaches without teaching by someone who took his creation seriously but understood that they were silly creatures. The tales of the Smurfs are not just rehashings of old story formulas; they take common themes and values and fashion something inspired. You can tell Peyo cared about the story in how long the writing is, how detailed the actual story comes down to be. I am wowed by this artist's universe.

My daughters love the Peyo Smurf graphic novels. I don't really though, as the writing is so absolutely tiny, it strains my eyes terribly to read them (and I'm not all that old). I love these anthologies though! They're bigger than the single comics, so the writing isn't quite so impossibly small. The binding and pages are great quality, and the print is vibrant. This book will stand up to reading and last much longer than the single books, and it's more value for the cost as well. We'll be collecting them all.

As I grew up on the TV show, and now I am an avid reader of comic books/graphic novels of all sorts I decided to grab the first volume to see if I liked it or was too childish. Well, I have to say it's more enjoyable than the cartoon series (not to knock it, but...). The artwork and printing of the stories is crisp and clean and it was definitely published by someone who cared. While it's for all ages I think adults, especially those who grew up in the late seventies to eighties, will appreciate it.

a very nice collection, printed well, that translates wonderfully today. great for kids and older kids. The price is surprising as well for it's size and length. It's larger than standard american comics, and has quite a few stories (listed above). There are moments of humor that remind me of some of my favorite french comics, and other moments that remind me a bit the personality found in some manga. To me, these books feel timeless and universal.

Very nice color edition of the original Smurf's comic strip, translated to English with a nice informative forward. This is a Christmas gift for my daughter so she doesn't have it yet but I'm confident it will be a huge hit, very nice edition.

I just adore the smurfs - I remember looking forward to the smurfs on tv every Saturday morning when growing up. They are one of the comfort memories of your childhood! A great book, and lot of fun for children and adults. I look forward to buying the rest of the set. Hardcover makes it perfect as a collector's item and gift. Smurftastic!

Udi Nussinovitch, MD, PhD has mainly dedicated his research to cardiac autoimmunity and autoinflammation, cardiac manifestations of systemic diseases, cell- and gene-based cardiac therapies, and the modulation of the cardiac electrophysiologic substrate for therapeutic purposes. He has published articles in leading rheumatologic and cardiovascular journals. He has also published several chapters in scientific textbooks, mostly dealing with cardiac autoimmunity. Dr Nussinovitch has been the recipient of several awards and serves as a reviewer for prestigious rheumatologic and cardiac journals.
