Stephen L. Moore, a sixth-generation Texan, graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, where he studied advertising, marketing, and journalism. He is the author of multiple books on World War II and Texas history, including The Battle for Hell’s Island: How a Small Band of Carrier Dive-Bombers Helped Save Guadalcanal; Pacific Payback: The Carrier Fly Boys Who Avenged Pearl Harbor at the Battle of Midway; Texas Rising: The Epic True Story of the Lone Star Republic and the Rise of the Texas Rangers, 1836-1846, and Taming Texas, a biography of his great-great-great grandfather William T. Sadler, who was one of the first Texas Ranger captains in the 1830s. Steve lives north of Dallas in Lantana, Texas, with his wife, Cindy, and their three children.

"As Good As Dead" tells the harrowing story of 150 American POWs being held by the Japanese on the island of Palawan in the Philippines. These men were survivors of the Bataan death march and the fall of Corregidor.These men endured over two years of brutality and starvation at the hands of their Japanese captors. Forced to build an airfield using only hand tools, many perished in the heat. Things continued to deteriorate, but by 1944, the Americans had turned the tide and were poised to retake the Philippines. Realizing that the Americans were about to invade, the Japanese issued orders that all POWs were to be killed.On December 14th, 1944, the Japanese guards at Palawan began a systematic extermination of the American prisoners. Men were burned alive, shot, and beheaded by their captors. Some thirty men managed to survive and leap over the surrounding cliffs to the beach below. By the next day, only eleven remained.This book tells the story of these eleven men. Most were burned and had suffered gunshots and bayonet stabs. Now, they had to remain one step ahead of the pursuing Japanese. They tried to find food and water while helping each other survive. Against almost impossible odds, these eleven men found assistance from Filipino guerrillas who risked their own lives to return these men to American lines.Author Stephen L. Moore has written an excellent book about one of the worst atrocities of World War II. He describes the terrible Bataan death march and the inhuman treatment these men suffered at the hands of the Japanese. He also describes the justice handed down by the Americans against the Japanese captors. These men forged a bond with one another and relied on each other to survive. They did. Highly recommended
The story is vivid, frightening and since it is true one realizes the horror of Japanese militarism of that time. All the individuals, Americans, Filipinos, British, Australians, Chinese, Koreans and civilians in every country the Japanese invaded were subject to the brutality which this book tells. The good thing is that people survived to tell their stories, and if one understands that good people need to always be strong, not just in their character but most importantly in the warriors that protect their way of life and the nation that they hold dear and sacred, then and only then will they be able to continue living in peace, because the enemies of good people and weak nations are a threat to all of us.
This is a wonderfully written book about one of the POW camps Japan kept our military in. It displays the extreme cruelty of the Japanese Army and the bravery and resourcefulness of the American soldiers and Marines that served in the Japanese death camp in Palawan Puerto Princesa Camp 10-A. .The book covers the miserable existence of many who served there and the ways the Japanese went out of their way to make them suffer. It tells about attempted escapes and the final actions where the Japanese were ordered to kill all of the prisoners and how some thwarted the enemy and escaped with the help of the Philippine resistance soldiers. It also covered their life after the war which was interesting in itself. I highly recommend this very well written account which was easy to read and allowed the reader to fully understand as well as possible the story of Camp 10-A, its prisoners and guards.
I've just finished reading this book. I had read one other book by Mr. Moore, so I knew he was a good author, but that did not really prepare me for what I found in this book. It is expertly researched and written. I had only read one other book, Ship of Ghosts by James Hornfischer, that had a lot on the treatment of POWs by the Japanese, but this one certainly complimented that book very well. Stephen's book is well researched, and includes many, many details on what transpired. One thing I also wasn't prepared for was the emotional impact this book had on me. I often found myself choked up over the tragedies and happenings being related. This book will be a prized part of my growing World War II book collection, and will definitely be worth another reading soon.
This was a powerfully told story of a few POWs who escaped a brutal camp on Palawan in the Philippines. As much as I have read about Bataan, the incredible brutality of the Japanese in a POW camp always shocks me. Spreading gasoline and lighting men in trenches on fire. How can it get worse? The escape of a few is incredible and we must also always remember how the Philippine natives risked all to help the escapees and pass along information as coast watchers. Another piece of the puzzle that was WWII. It isn’t a well known tale but one that should be told.
I love reading stories from the war in the Pacific. This was a story I was not familiar with and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was both inspirational and gut-wrenching all at the same time. There are no pulled punches in terms of the brutality of the Japanese. My only suggestion is that there were more maps and that the maps that do exist had an index and were easier to find. I found myself googly locations so I knew what I was looking at. Later in the book there are more maps, but would like to see an updated version with more of them earlier. However, in terms of story and history, this is a top notch read.
Great detail on WWll one should have. These marines deserve to have their stories told. Real insights into the Japanese cruelty and disregard for decency.
Great story - be prepared for some gruesome tales and some heroic stories. The story of the US servicemen in a POW camp was one of courage, unbelievable horror and raw determination. In addition, it was a huge lesson about the Philipinos and their heroism during WWII.
