Fantastic book for preteens. I enjoyed the book too.

The Survival Guide for Money Smarts is a useful tool for teaching kids money skills for the real world. There are several appealing elements to the book: it has a light, friendly tone which makes a potentially dry subject more accessible; there are plenty of "real world kids" whose stories illustrate the concepts being presented; there are a series of Choose Your Own Spending Ending scenarios which allow readers to make money choices and then see the results of those choices. An extra-fun idea is the "Fantasy Investing" game in the investments section--a great way to learn investment techniques for a student, and an excellent tie-in to investment teams in middle schools. Other concrete activities include creating budgets, setting goals, dealing with debit and credit cards, and even how to gauge which companies align with one's personal ethics. Recommended for children ages 12-16.

This is a terrific book for kids and adults who take care of them. The authors introduce students to basic economic terms (fee, wage, salary), business etiquette (clean up your work space, be courteous), and provide clear strategies for how to set goals and save for them. What I love most about the book is how it invites readers to reflect on who they are and what they want -- playing high-level sports, going to college, traveling, etc. The instructions about how evaluate your goals is especially helpful: Will reaching the goal make you happy? How proud will you be if you reach this goal? And my personal favorite, How good will you feel about this goal five years after reaching it? All told the book is funny, readable, and smart. I'm picking up a few for nieces and nephews, too.

This is a much needed book for kids, teens, and many adults! The authors do an excellent job of introducing important concepts to kids, including earning money, saving, budgeting, and investing. Eric's kid-friendly format is always appreciated, as it makes these serious concepts much more accessible to kids and teens. I especially like the parts about being a smart consumer (and not falling for advertising ploys),setting aside money to give to charities, and the risks involved with using credit. This book is a must-have for any child and might go a long way to helping the younger generation avoid the financial pitfalls many adults sadly find themselves in today.

My 10 year old daughter loved this book. She is ready to start babysitting, but was unsure of how to promote herself and of how much to charge. Chapter 3 Beyond the Lemonade Stand will most certainly be referenced again. We're planning on giving this book to cousins for Christmas.

This book changed my life in so many ways. It was actually given to me by my flight commander at the time during my time in the USAF. We were discussing being a victim and he thought I'd find some useful information in this book. He wasn't wrong either, because it woke me up from a life that I was choosing to live all wrong. The author is really blunt and doesn't sugar coat anything. Sometimes the truth hurts, in my case it forced me to face a period in my life that was hard to comprehend but once I did I was able to move forward to a better place while leaving the ugly behind. My life has gotten to a better place because of it. That flight commander will never know how much he changed my life, but I am where I am today because of him.

I come from a pretty dysfunctional family, the past was holding me back and i was having a hard time just getting through life with all the horrible memories and unhealthy relationship patterns i was continuing, because thats all i knew. I didnt know how to help myself. My therapist recommended this book, and I'm so glad she did. It was extremely helpful in helping me process everything, change relationship patterns, and actually become a way more emotionally healthy individual. Great book. Im not a big reader, but this was very easy to read/understand.

My friends & I are doing a book study & decided to read this book together because we all found ourselves in Dysfunctional Relationships & roles. This book is excellent at helping us understand the roles & how we move into other roles & keep the circle of dysfunction going. I always knew I was Co-dependent or a rescuer but never realized I moved into persecutor role & victim role with other family members but I can sure see it now. Can't wait to get to recovery end part - there is so much to absorb & understand that we have met for 2 months weekly for 3 hours & just finished chapter 6. Everyone should read this & dissect it like we do.

Great book if you need an eye opener for your personal family dynamic. Good for recognizing the issues behind the illusion. Not so great if you looking for ways to improve.. just recommends therapy for the most part..not much problem solving.

This book was totally life changing!! It could have been written better, and I dont care for some of the examples used, but that is totally ok! The message was exactly what I needed! I wish I had read it 20 or 30 years ago!

This was a self help book recommended by my therapist. Very good book to help one see how they are in and how to get out of the victim trap. The description of personalities is spot on. This book made me realize things about my personality that I had not been aware of before.

This book had some really good insights in regards to the dynamics involved with victim relationships. It will certainly add depth of understanding to most people seeking knowledge of victims and family systems that create and keep people mired in such mind sets. It helped me realize I had to do some forgiving of some things I was holding on to so that I could gain some of my power back. I give it 5 stars for the way that insight was conveyed. Author sings praise for hypnosis in every chapter which was distracting and claimed people could go back to when they where in the womb and correct feeling of being unwanted. That I don't buy. If you can look past some kookiness that gets repetitive after a few chapters then there is some good info here.

the book is an easy read because it is referencing case studies and not written in academic language (which is not what you want for a bed time read), although the theory is covered and based on research.Initially slightly misleading impression that it is an instant process to get to the deep hypnotherapy and regression - it does become apparent later that it is a long and intense process (not a quick fix).Very helpful to recognise behaviour patterns in everyday life. We all participate in the rescuer/victim/prosecutor cycle and and can have much healthier relationships through honest communication.

I really regret having read this book. It was upsetting and awakened memories I am unwilling to relive. For me that means the book was good. I am a retired criminal defense attorney. The last ten years of my career were spent exclusively defending murder and death penalty murder cases. I go out of my way to avoid reading crime novels or watching crime shows or movies because they are so removed from any semblance of reality as to be laughable. I am especially disturbed by that genre of fiction that treats murder as a parlor game. Murder is ugly and never entertaining. I decided to read this book after reading the review of another criminal lawyer that is a GR friend. I found this book to be mercifully short on courtroom drama and case investigation and preparation but nevertheless accurate in most respects. Where this book shines is in illustrating the devastation the accusation of a serious crime can visit upon an average middle class family. While I was less than pleased with the theatrical ending the behavior of the family members and their friends and neighbors was spot-on accurate as was the behavior of the prosecuting attorney. In sum I'd say this was probably the most accurately depicted crime novel I've ever read excepting, of course, the device employed as an ending but, like I said, I don't read many crime novels. Now I need to find a book to help me forget what this book has me remembering.

Oh. My. God.You know, I nearly abandoned this book based purely on the first couple of pages of the book because I disliked the court transcript formatting for those pages. I thought it was difficult to follow and lacked depth (which ought to be obvious). If I'd not pressed on, I'd have missed one of the most entertaining reads I've enjoyed in some time.Ironically, these first couple of pages, and the way they tie the entire story together and wrap it up in a tidy bow, are precisely the reason this book made it onto my coveted list of five star books. (Alright, alright. Maybe not COVETED. I'm a nobody, after all.)I realize I'm fangirling, but this book is BRILLIANT. It's not just the way the author ties one end of the book to the other so skillfully. It's not just the brilliant pacing which rarely ("never" is too strong a word for me) drags. It's not just the fact that every move the author made throughout this novel was so deliberately planned (and, no doubt, well-revised). Amazingly, it's not what this book made me feel.Oh no. It's what this book DIDN'T make me feel.Truly and astonishingly perhaps the MOST psychological book I've ever read, brilliantly executed, and outstanding in its construction.Oh yes. I loved this book.But that's not what you REALLY want to know. You want to know if YOU will love this book.I like to give my readers information about the book -- a warning label, if you will, of things about the book which may not appeal to some readers. When I first started writing, I couldn't think of a single thing I'd want you to know before you invest your time (and potentially your money) in this novel. Fortunately, the more I wrote, the more cognizant I became of some of the flaws in this novel.So here's what you need to know before you purchase, or borrow this book.First, Landay writes in huge blocks of text.See how short my paragraphs are here on my blog? I try to keep them a length which is easily readable for most people. We tolerance is lower, of course, than print tolerance, but I try to keep my paragraphs at a length readers can easily scan without losing any significant amount of information. A paragraph is generally about five sentences long, often four lines long in text. This paragraph is five sentences long.Landay's paragraphs sometimes span the length of AN ENTIRE PAGE of text. This makes it more difficult for the reader to scan the paragraph for relevant information, slows down speed readers, and can make even a standard reader (one reading every word at a normal pace) frustrated because its point seems interminable. I consider myself a "standard reader" and Landay's paragraphs slowed me down considerably.This is never more relevant than at the end of the novel.Because following the climax, Landay continues with the story.Now if you're like me, you like something after the climax. You're probably not looking for much more story, just something to conclude what you've been reading and to wrap up the book. Some books are terrible about ending immediately after the climax -- what we'd call a "cliffhanger," sometimes without any intention of continuing as a series. So I appreciate the effort. Really, I do.The problem is the massive paragraphs. They initially felt superfluous, as though they intended only to tell the reader the general sense of what happened after the climactic moment. I asked myself several times, while reading page-long paragraphs, why the author had included this information. (I'm glad I kept reading, because the story actually continued, but suffice it to say this was frustrating, and somewhat tedious.)I know what you're probably thinking: "Well good! There's something to wrap the story up!" And if you are a die hard for post-climax conclusions, this will definitely be helpful for you.But this post-climax storyline goes on for several chapters. I'll be the first to admit it's important, and it seems the author had it in mind the entire time, but it's poorly paced. A quick-moving story takes a turn for slow and drawn out. And maybe -- just MAYBE -- this was information I didn't WANT to have.Not that it destroys the story, because it doesn't. But I'd have been fine with a bit more left to the imagination. (Intriguingly, one of the one-star reviews on Amazon argues that the entire story leaves TOO MUCH to the imagination!)In another note about the ending, it's similar to the ending of another book I've read. Not that it's predictable, because HOLY MOLY I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING! But the resemblance struck me as odd and jarring. I didn't like the ending of THAT book, but in this case I felt like it worked. (No, I'm not going to tell you which book, in case you've read it and can then compare notes.)Finally, I want you to know before committing to read this book that the characters aren't likable.I always find myself wondering at the fact this is such a BIG deal for so many reviewers. "I didn't like the characters." Really? Do you like EVERYBODY you come into contact with on a day to day basis? Now granted, even the worst monsters in history have had FRIENDS who loved them in spite of their flaws, but that's beside the point.Some people just aren't likable, and Andy, Laurie, and Jacob Barber are on the list of unlikable people in the world. (So, as it happens, are Derek Yoo, and Paul Duffy. You're going to despise Ben Rifkin and Neal Loguidice by the time it's done as well (though that is less veiled than the aforementioned characters).There's good in each of them. Well, MOST of them, anyway. But I don't think you're supposed to like them. No, not even Andy, the narrative character, Jacob's father. Not even sweet, sympathetic Laurie. While not caricatures, I do believe these characters were made intentionally exactly the way they are. So if you're reading this book, and you pause to think to yourself "something seems to be missing from this characterization," try to consider some people have something missing from their personality and that's just the way the author intended it to be.Oh yes, I loved this book. LOVED this book. It was amazing! I'm not finding many negative reviews I don't feel missed the point of the novel. I think you'll enjoy it too, if you can live with the aforementioned flaws.

This is a haunting story that will stay with you long after you read the final chapter. It is the ultimate look at nature vs. nurture in the realm of murder and mayhem.While the title was a bit distracting, as I expected this to be purely a courtroom drama, this book was astonishing on many levels and will leave you reeling. While the effect of our physical construction on our behavior and character is a revolutionary idea, a completely new way to think about ourselves, perhaps we’ve always unconsciously done this and science has now put a fine point on it.Is it possible to be hard wired to murder or commit other crimes through genetic material handed down through our ancestral DNA? Can our DNA predispose us to violence as we’ve believed it has to disease?This novel is so intense that I can hardly imagine a reader who is not affected by the message and horrified by the ending. It is hard to think there will be a reader who is not somehow moved by this novel. It should strike a nerve in every reader, regardless of where they fall out on the message. Highly recommended. I will be reading a lot more of William Landay.

One morning, on the way to school, a 14-year old bully is murdered. The story is narrated by Andy Barber, the Asst. District Attorney who takes on the case -- until his son Jacob, the victim's classmate and a victim of his bullying, is accused of the crime.This mystery/courtoom drama gets some things right. The premise is interesting and the depiction of the legal process and its affect on the accused and his family, in particular. But the pace is very slow and the courtroom scenes are excruciatingly slow .. accurate maybe, but a real slog, for me at least. Further, and more damaging, there is a silly sideline about a 'murder gene' and we never really get to know Jacob or his mother, who are key figures in the story.The ending is a knockout twist and the structure of the book is interesting, a story within a story. I liked that. I might read another book by this author, but I like mysteries with more action and tend to steer away from courtroom dramas and toward police procedurals. I got this book because the ratings were so high, and I can see why some people loved it, but for me it confirmed my preference for detective stories.

Great book but wish it was a bit larger, it's hard to look at all the photos in this tiny format ;(

It says something for the world's premier city that this book could have been published any time in the last few decades and still have been full of wonderful photobooks. There are forty-nine titles considered and each gets an initial page with a long essay combined with a largish thumbnail of the cover then subsequent pages have reproductions of several inside spreads from each book. I think it's worth saying that these are what might be considered art photobooks rather than those bland city tourist ones full of color photos sourced from image libraries.The first book (or rather a forty-eight page brochure) is the 1931 published 'Empire State' with photos about its construction, eleven other books, including Abbott's 'Changing New York', Weegee's 'Naked City' and Klein's 'Life is good for you in New York' take the reader up to 1960. The remaining thirty-seven books run up to 2002 with last one the Swiss published 'Here is New York' dealing with 9/11.What I liked about this book is the chance to see foreign published ones with the work of photographers I hadn't heard of but oddly there is nothing from Andreas Feininger who had at least two books of his city photos published.It's unfortunate that this is a paperback with the pictures printed in four-color black using a 175 screen. I would have happily paid more for a larger book using a good art paper for better reproduction of these fascinating New York photobooks.

Many Christians today are theologically convinced of the ongoing work of the Spirit (continuationists), but who have not seen the practices of the Spirit in our churches, and who desperately want to see God glorified in healings and by verbal prophecy and experience firsthand the edification of the gift of tongues delivered and interpreted. It can be a daunting challenge to simply wait. So, what are we to do while we wait? Or should we stop waiting and start acting?Into these perplexing questions comes a tremendous book from Sam Storms, the Lead Pastor for Preaching and Vision at Bridgeway Church in Oklahoma City.Numerous books have been written which give the necessary biblical and theological foundations for what Sam Storms calls Charismatic Calvinism (works by scholars like Wayne Grudem and D. A. Carson). And numerous books have been written which share encouraging stories and experiences from Charismatic Calvinists (works by scholars like Jack Deere and Storms). But not much has been written for the Christian who is a convinced Charismatic Calvinist theologically, but a Cessationist functionally.Storms has written for “theologically sophisticated followers of Christ who are open to and hungry for the present tense voice of the Spirit while always subject to the functional and final authority of the written text of Scripture” (13). If you want to go deeper in pursuing the power of the Spirit, or if you are a pastor or church leader who wants to help others go deeper in pursuing the power of the Spirit, Storms’s book will help.He assumes, “The power of the miraculous charismata is still available for those who believe, pray for, and humbly pursue it” (15). But he nuances that assumption well. First, he realizes, “Bible-believing evangelicals will never be truly open to the pursuit of spiritual gifts unless they see them clearly taught in Scripture” (28). So pastors, we must teach, teach, teach. And he also realizes, “God is far more pleased with our obedience than he is with our success. . . . We please him not by always producing results but by always practicing obedience” (30–31). Which means, we are responsible to simply ask, seek, and knock; God is responsible to empower us and apportion gifts to us as he pleases. Again, Storms challenges us, “The reception of a spiritual gift is dependent on one’s prayer for it. Ask and you shall receive. Don’t ask, and you shouldn’t expect to receive” (43–44). Again, “There is little, if any, hope for the proper use of spiritual gifts apart from a focused and consistent commitment to praying” (45).But he is wise to also admit, “The Holy Spirit wants to be pursued but refuses to be pushed” and then to counsel readers, “If you find yourself lacking a specific spiritual gift, notwithstanding your persistent and passionate prayers that it might be granted to you, the time may come when you should pause and thank God for whatever gifts he has been pleased to bestow and move on in the ministry he has already granted you” (35).His advice is not only practical; it gets to the heart of our pursuit of God and his gifts. “If you are a leader or teacher thinking of teaching on prayer, I recommend making it your goal through the teaching to increase the level of expectancy in the hearts of your people when they pray for themselves or for others” (50). God accomplishes much through the heartfelt trust of those who cry out to him: “Otherwise humanly impossible feats, events that require supernatural and miraculous power, can occur when prayer is filled with faith” (54).One of the most significant connections this book made for me was the power of fasting for receiving spiritual gifts. Storms writes, “Fasting is the first cousin to prayer in the sense that together they are the ordained means by which God is pleased to give us what we need” (58). Our Savior himself modeled this practice: “As Jesus was standing on the brink of the most important public ministry the world had ever seen, he chose to fast!” (63). Perhaps we have not seen greater spiritual growth and power simply because we have not sought God with the intensity and commitment fasting represents.Storms also believes God still heals today—and he gives practical advice for seeking such healing. “When I pray for people to be healed, I typically ask them to confess out loud their belief that God is able to heal them. I suggest you do the same” (71). Again, he counsels, “Begin with an attempt to get at the underlying root of sin or addiction in a person’s life, followed by a call to repentance and encouragement to make certain alterations in one’s habits of life and choices” (77).I also appreciate Storms’s willingness to go where other teachers might shrink back from out of discomfort; for instance, demon possession and deliverance. He writes, “The foundation of biblical deliverance ministry is a clear understanding of Christian identity and the authority believers have in Christ” (152). The gospel changes everything—even the dark, scary aspects of life.The only subject I wish Storms had spent more time on was advice for those pursuing the gift of speaking in tongues. There seems to be very little such practical, concrete advice for those who are committed to the word of God—the very word that says, “I want you all to speak in tongues” (1 Corinthians 14:5). Many seem to shy away from this particular gift, I believe, because it is so unusual and, quite frankly, because it embarrasses us. Please don’t misunderstand me: I don’t think Storms shied away from this issue—and certainly not out of fear or embarrassment. He addresses his experience at length in his book Convergence: Spiritual Journeys of a Charismatic Calvinist. But I would love answers to simple questions such as: Should I just ask for this gift and simply wait for it to happen to me in silence—or should I try speaking whatever syllables come to mind? What are some signs that I’m truly speaking in tongues and not simply speaking gibberish? Is it possible to think that I’m not speaking in tongues when I actually am?But, again, I thought this book was tremendous, so I conclude with two more quotes to stir you up to read it for yourself: “Whether it is the fire that burns up and consumes the dross of sin in our lives or the fire of power and energy that fuels our efforts to labor for the glory of Christ and the good of his people, the Holy Spirit is a glorious gift, the consummate treasure whom we hold dear” (179). “Pray yet again that God would increase your spiritual hunger pangs, that he would intensify your thirst for godly power, that he would never allow you to settle for the status quo” (239–240).

This book offers excellent, practical advice for how to biblically, humbly, wisely practice the sign gifts and coach others to do so in home groups and churches. Storms points out the complexity of illnesses, for example, and cautions people to not automatically assume sin or lack of faith is the cause. He also provides a great framework for understanding how human error can misinterpret or misapply a true prophetic revelation from the Lord. His examples illustrate biblical truths at work.Although never a cessationist, I grew up in a Southern Baptist church and hadn't learned much about how to eagerly desire and pursue tongues, prophecy, and gifts of healing for the edification and consolation of the Church. This book has proved really helpful and represents the "reformed charismatic" strain of Christianity, which encourages the convergence of Word and Spirit in the Church. That is, "The Spirit of God does the work of God through the Word of God" (Chandler).Loving God passionately and being led and empowered by the Spirit are not in opposition to a deep understanding of the Bible and theology: the two should walk hand in hand. As a charismatic, Storms would affirm the sign gifts but not the Pentecostal doctrines of subsequence or initial physical evidence. For those interested in more, check out the videos from the Convergence Conference held at Storms' church this fall.

I have grown up in the church and have experienced both (extreme) sides of the spectrum when it comes to spiritual gifts: from the fanatic, overly-emotional abuse of the gifts to the complete disregard for the gifts all together. I'll have to admit, I approached this book with some skepticism. But I found Sam's approach to the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be incredibly refreshing. Sam points to scripture all throughout the book, and the best part is that he encourages the reader to look at the context of the verses for themselves. You start to see the whole picture, not just pieces. This book left me more excited about the Giver of the gifts, rather than being left fixated on merely the gifts themselves (which is a healthy response!). My view of spiritual gifts has been challenged and I'm excited to continue to search through scripture to deepen my understanding of this.

While a parishioner would benefit from this book, it feels like it is written for pastors and church leaders. It is full of practical advice for how to lead your church in baby steps toward the full-range of the spiritual gifts (prophecy and healing, in particular). It would probably be best read by an entire staff or as part of a leadership retreat.As a pastor in a non-denominational church, I was able to construct some very specific steps forward after reading Sam Storms' book. I desire to see the full-range of the spiritual gifts at work in my church, but I have been lacking in specific guidance in how to do that.

This book has been very formative in my walk with Jesus as I understand more of the Spirit’s work. This gave me more traction to move forward with the spiritual gifts, assurance that it won’t be perfect like the rest of my walk, and a renewed passion to see the Kingdom advance even more. I recommend this to anyone who desires these things.Some who left bad reviews did so with some unfair points.1. Storms wrote “A Beginner’s Guide to Spiritual Gifts” as a preliminary read. If you’re on the fence about continuationist theology I recommend you read that first.2. Storms goes through the church history of the spiritual gifts. This is not a 100 year old theology. It spans from Acts until today. To see otherwise is simply bad study.

He offers good exegesis concerning gifts, and ministry experience. The book is as practical as the title suggests. Some of the practices are not explicitly from Scripture, but the motivation is always the text. My favorite parts are where Storms offers biblical exegesis on passages from Paul concerning gifts.

Well thought out and sourced. Accessible style. Not sure how the channeling talents of the author fit in with the scientific tone. Also, many distracting mistakes in grammar and punctuation.

I really liked this book!! Have not seen anything better in this field to prove, with scientific & psychic information, that the Pleiadians have visited Earth in the distant past. Also verifies the information that our DNA was altered by some being with more advanced technology. Ties in with some of what Zecharia Sitchin says, and also what many Pleiadian channels have told us. I recommend reading the book "Alcheringa" by Valerie Barrow first, since that will make clear what Daniella is referring to in this book. The info sources are reputable, mostly online. There are many in print books that propose similar scenarios, but have not the scientific backup Ms. Fenton gives. Easy to read and never a dull moment! My highest praises to a wonderful job exceedingly well done. Thank you!

This book is so jam packed with interesting research that I would love to give it five stars. However, the excessive use of commas was distracting and forced me to reread almost every passage. I found myself editing in my mind as I went along, wishing someone had made said changes before it went to print.That being said, this opened my eyes to many subjects to explore further.

This is an important work for understanding our early origins as a species. The Kindle version is good because there are numerous references that can be easily found via the links provided. I took one star off because there are a couple of type errors, hopefully there will be an expanded release in the future. Recommended!

This was an incredibly fast read. I enjoyed it very much and recommend to all who are curious about our origin as a species.

This brief, easy to read book offers an understandable summary of current ancient alien theory and scientific investigation of unanswered questions posed in the domains of genetics, astrobiology, brain research, and technology. References to other books, articles and relevant films will keep the conversation going.I would like to know more about Daniella Fenton's experience as a shaman. And a professional copyreader would help fix all those comma splices that slow down the reading.

I enjoyed the book and information from another side of the world's perspective. Hope the info bares out.That said, there are areas with a bumpy transition. It seems like two different people are authoring . All-in-all, I enjoyed this! Will look for more
