A pleasant entertaining read, light on depth; human and revealing but better elsewhere?As a lifelong fan of Michael Caine and his innumerable characterizations on-screen I anticipated this book with great pleasure and expectation and pleasure was certainly derived from the easily-digestible and 'Caine-accented' writing style.Mild disappointment followed completion as I found the book failed to satisfy my, perhaps unreasonable, expectations as follows.The lessons were few, fundamental and (for me and literal tolerance) too-oft repeated. Be timely, be prepared, look forward (not back), don't pay attention to tried-and-tested advice from those you can't rely on for honesty and your best interests and always be involved as you never know where the next (better) gig is coming from. Get stuck in and 'blow the bl**dy doors off'.Much detail of his humble beginnings/parentage/disadvantage/health etc., is a great framework for measuring the intensity of his slow, stuttering/stumbling-yet-inexorable rise to fame through "Alfie", "Hannah and her Sisters", "The Italian Job", "Sleuth", "Dressed To Kill" and the "Batman" trilogy in which he found himself resignedly comfortable with no longer knocking himself out playing the youthful man-appeal star (but the older, wiser, character).An interesting trip through the who's-who of British and Hollywood directors, casting-folk and co-stars is fine, along with the inevitable demise of so many upon whom he has leaned for, and was provided with, invaluable support, guidance, advice and moral intervention at stages when he might otherwise have given up, provides the "keep going" mantra credibility and value; I just was expecting so much more from a 60+ year career of involvement which I could use from one of my on-screen heroes.Great and (too-oft)repeated credit goes to his Mother and his wife (which is both gentlemanly and refreshingly decent/honest) but as a go-to reference to what to do if one hasn't had one or either of these, it becomes a tad annoying as a reader.His generosity in rewarding his appreciation to almost all of those with whom he has come into contact throughout his many years are a testament to his behavior as a sincerely decent chap, at once comfortable with whom he has become tinged with nicely delivered humanity where he has not met his own moral standards without mawkishness or excessive muck-raking or biological insensitivity to readers of any age.The final chapters covering - in oft-repeated depth - his sanguine delight in his current status, the opportunities his success and wealth have afforded him are a pleasing 'curtain' to a truly magnificent career and, perhaps there are biographies published which give a more in-depth coverage of the career with which one may more likely find the mix of the practical with the star-shone for which this reader had hoped in this volume.Certainly a near-must for die-hard Caine fans but, as a comprehensive dictum for 'how to do what I did', I found it just a tad wanting... now, "Not a lot of people know that....."
I have been a Michael Caine fan since I was a kid. This books is such an enjoyable read. His sense of humor and honesty comes through page after page. His wisdom can be applied to all walks of life, not just those who aspire to become stars of the stage and screen. A very enjoyable read indeed.
A delightful story written by, I think, a modest man in a pleasant non-preachy manner. Lovely sense of humor and not too bloody full of himself.
An excellent book if you aspire to be part of the acting profession, not so much otherwise. There are a few interesting moments and some good advice for living but entertainment level is minimal.
I love the way he writes with such a positive look on life. I received some great lessons about life which will remain with me forever. He is not only a great actor but a great human being. I would recommend this book if you need a feel good moment in your life.
I like Mr. Caine, but I found this book rather bland and not quite what I was expecting. I admit to tapping through most of the pages because it was more of a "self help" book than anything else. Would have been better to hear more in-depth bits about his incredible career. http://amzn.to/Wi469m
I'm a big fan, and after reading "What's It All About", which Michael wrote in 1992, I was looking for the second half of the story. This book isn't quite that, but it is very entertaining - which is why I read celebrity bios in the first place. Some humor, some serious, all well-presented.
