A friend told me about this one. I did purchase it and of course put it on a pile of stuff I had to read. Originally, I had thought this was the basis of the movie Logan. I was wrong.This is an apocalyptic story. The US is devastated after the super villains had an epiphany and decided to all team up for the purpose of eliminating the super heroes. Only a few remain. Logan no longer goes by Wolverine and has refused to use his claws for decades. He has a family and trying to make an existence as a farmer. It's not going well and he owes rent to his land lords the Hulk gang. Yes they are all green. Hawkeye shows up with a chance for money. He needs help transporting something and want's Logan to read the map while he drives. Did I mention Hawkeye is blind? The fun begins as we go on an adventure and slowly learned what happened to Logan and the heroes.I was surprised to find Logan as a pacifist and wondered what happened to him? The answer was.....rather startling.The ending is pure Wolverine and that is all I will say about it.There was supposed to be a sequel but for some reason it hasn't happened. Might be too gritty for the new owners of Marvel. Time will tell.
It's amazing what art,writing, and a amazing plot. Why I chose 5 stars because it's a story you don't see everyday. Whoever loves wolverine and doesn't know about this give it a shot. It's worth it.
Old Man Logan was an extraordinary read. The story posits, “what would happen in the Marvel universe if all the super villains pooled their resources?†The result is a terrible dystopia with a United States carved up between some of the most powerful opponents Marvel heroes have ever faced. Logan, still alive due to his healing factor - and some murky details around the fall of the heroes - is quietly tending a family farm, having sworn to never again raise his claws against a living creature. But having fallen on hard times, he’s forced to take a side job helping a blind Hawkeye navigate across the country. What follows is a surrealist version of The Road, with the two experiencing all this terrifying new world has to offer. The ending is tragic in the true sense of the Greeks, but is oh so satisfying. Highly recommended.
Good artwork, a few highly memorable shots, but I was hoping for something a little deeper. I read lots of comics, but I don't follow as much super hero stuff. If I was really into action, I think I would have found this much more satisfying. As it stands, a world was created with a few massive villains, each one gets subsequently dispatched in 1-2 issues time. It cheapened the whole affair to me; I would have like to see much more exploration of these different worlds -- but maybe I was looking for the wrong thing.
Simply put. If you've seen Logan and not read this series you're missing out. No. They are not the same story. But to see Wolverine here you will get the changes and understand his character better.
Old man logan is essentially a western wrapped in the trappings of a superhero comic. In it we see a broken down former warrior called out of retirement for one final gig to save his farm and family. The world of old man logan is just as interesting as logan himself, and I could almost see other books that just flush out what this world is like. The art is also great, plenty of gushing blood and horrible twisted monstrosities.
Old Man Logan's premise is that of a classic road trip and Western, more rooted in 70s film than the X-men. Miller's premise is hardly believable even in comic terms, and hillbilly cannibal Hulk spawn is a bit much. That said the pathos and development of the character allowed by such a setting is a welcome change to the younger Logan who became almost an annoyance in the late 90s and early aught comics.
It's difficult for any comic book character to have a final story. Though not as solid a mythological nor symbolic tale as The Dark Knight Returns, Old Man Logan visits a man who is broken and only wants to live his life in peace after a horrific instance shattered his confidence and his psyche. Old Man Logan has the feel of an old Clint Eastwood Western and manages to pull it off. In some respects it also feels like a "What If" tale. Seeing Logan the movie starring Hugh Jackson, I wanted to go read the source material that is the inspiration for the movie. Highly recommend.
