First off, this is the catalog of an exhibition currently underway (2018) in the United States: in Denver this winter, Louisville in the spring and Williamstown (The Clark) in the summer. Note that book and exhibition focuses only on paintings and not sculpture or decorative arts, so if you're looking for a discussion about the work of, say, Camille Claudel you're out of luckThat said, this is a long-overdue conversation about the lack of attention given to those incredible women artists in Paris during the last half of the 19th century. Even if you're going to the exhibition -- which I hope to do in Louisville -- you'll want a copy. The color plates, which make up the bulk of the book are fantastic and you'll get an opportunity to see some truly spectacular art that is finally getting much-needed attention.
I saw this exhibit in Denver and while the images in the book are not as good of the originals, it is a wonderful collection. This is such a great collection of women artist who overcame predijuice in order to become incredibly accomplished artists.

Great information about each artist and all in one work.
Even though I'm a feminist, I found myself annoyed with the author's convoluted efforts to turn every brushstroke into feminine anger. The history of women artists is far more noble than the author's rants. The book does contain some fine reproductions of paintings, though.
a beautiful selection of paintings, beautifully designed. as an art historian, the interpretation is passionate and well-researched, and the opening section detail shots really bring the paintings to life. i must see the exhibition!
Begins with a background about women and their places in society at the time as well as information on where they were allowed to travers and with whom, not an easy existence, surprising considering the liberal leanings of the city.Eventually their works are show, features cross-page images, size, and location of the pieces. Topics include woman in domestic settings, sitting, with a fan, and with flowers. Other topics include children, war, Bible scenes. Some bare skin.
Extraordinary selection of images in a book that illuminates a whole new way of understanding the development of art in the west.
