Now that coloring books are so IN, to add an Austen coloring book becomes a must for every Janeite. This book includes over 40 designs, including replicas of the bookends designed for the Manga Classics collection. Included are images not only of the manga editions of Emma and Pride & Prejudice, but also the soon to be released Sense & Sensibility manga edition. The only quibble and that is why I am giving only four stars out of five is because in the images Willoughby is named George Willoughby, when his name is really JOHN, John Willoughby. I am afraid the manga edition of the novel will also include that mistake.

Very appropriate coloring book for those who want to color content versus repeating images.
The 45 pages of designs in this coloring book are done in Manga form with lots of big eyed girls. The designs are detailed and intricate with some having small areas to color. They represent three stories: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility. Parts of each story are included on each of the design pages. Interestingly, at the end of the book, there is a page which refers you to actual story books done in this form.Each of the stories is well represented, so a fan of Austen (such as myself) should have fun coloring. Some of the designs have quite elaborate frames which adds to the fun of coloring. I don't have many coloring books which have this detail. There are 43 pages of story designs and two additional pages of multiple bookmark style designs.I will go into more detail about the physical book below but in an overview this is what I found:45 Jane Austen inspired Design pagesPrinted on one side of pagePaper is thin, white and non-perforatedGlue BindingDesigns do not merge into bindingAlcohol and Water based makers bleed through the pageGel pens and India ink pens leave shadows of color on back of the pageColoring pencils work wellThe designs in this book are printed on one side of thin, slick, non-perforated white paper. The paper has a really smooth feel to it as if it might be coated with something. The designs do not merge into the binding. The binding is glued rather than sewn. If you want to remove a page, you can cut it out without loss of design elements. I could get the book to open to a fairly flat position for coloring.I test my coloring books with various mediums (which I will list in the comments section below for anyone interested.) Here are the results of my tests:Alcohol and water based markers bleed through the paper. Gel pens and India ink pens leave easily discernible shadows of color on the back of the page. Coloring pencils worked well. The soft lead pencils layered well and blended well but use a light hand when using a blending pencil as you can remove too much color if you press firmly. The hard lead had good color but also dented the back of the page.I will use, and suggest others do as well, a blotter page under my working page regardless of which medium I use to prevent damage to the pages following.
Not good at all, I can't recommend this coloring book..
Subject Matter: 5/5Gorgeous artwork and quotes from Austen's works. Characters are beautiful and also has plenty of background objects(supporting characters, flowers, furniture etc)Paper and Coloring Medium: 4/5This book will work with all colored pencils and markers.Single-side printed pages are nice but thin, so if you use markers you will have to put some paper underneath prevent bleed-out. The paper will cause markers to feather a bit when you are coloring fine/tiny tipped areas like tips of leaves etc. Personally I don't know if artists have any say in paper quality but I sure hope they do catch on this. It is very annoying to see books with gorgeous art, only with meh paper..Total: 4.5/5Price is right, and great artwork is still good enough to forget about paper. And I am not saying it is the worse paper - it is quite common with this industry. If this book gets re-printed with better paper I will happily buy again, even with higher price.
