Probably the best, most lucid book I have ever read on the history of Islamic Law/Islamic intellectual history. Partly because of this book I applied to the University of Chicago, and got accepted. Ahmed El-Shamsy has brought much needed light to the development of Sharia in the early period. This book is extremely well researched and well cited in convenient footnotes. A lot of the book is based off of al-Umm from Imam Shafi'i and shows how Sharia become written down and canonized by the Shafi'is created a shift from an aural/oral culture to a written culture. This impacted the other Jurists of the time, and Islamic Law forever. The book is accessible to the non-specialist and specialist alike. Dr El-Shamsy is one of the great luminaries of our time. This is a MAJOR contribution to the study of Islamic Law and Islamic Studies in general.
