As you read her words, it’s so easy to visualize the scenes playing out before you, and you are drawn into their world, hearing their voices, and feeling each and every emotion. And in “The Vixen”, so much emotion!Connor Steele and Ophelia Killoran are like no other couple. As children they struggled through their fears on the streets of St. Giles, their paths crossing briefly, and each time one reaching out in a single gesture rescuing the other. The final time, his sacrifice, saving her. To when the investigation into a missing child brings them together as adults. To say you are put through an emotional wringer is no understatement. Both are shocked to see each other & what each have become in adulthood. Ophelia, middle sister to Devils Den proprietor Broderick Killoran, who ventures into the dark, dangerous streets at night to rescue vulnerable children. Connor, who was adopted by a powerful Earl & become a respected investigator. He is hired by a lord to look into his son’s disappearance, long ago thought killed in a fire that claimed his mother blamed on the Lord. Though his investigation he crosses paths with Ophelia who is pushed into society by her brother to make a match with a man of station. They each find long ago feelings for one another are brought to the surface, they fall in love. Connor’s adopted father does not approve of Ophelia & wants Connor to wed his widowed, penniless goddaughter. This is the most emotionally charged part of the book. If you want to know how it ends please read this fantastic story, be prepared to use a box of Kleenex though!I cannot recommend this book enough, just when I think Christi can’t get better she delivers another amazing story, her best book yet. Remember love always prevails.

It is not often that I sit and cry while reading a "romance" story. Well, Christi Caldwell pulled out all the bells and whistles in The Vixen. We have Connor, a street boy who was rescued by Ophelia when they were children, and then years later he returned the favor to Ophelia. Connor was adopted by a nob after offering himself up to save the young girl from Newgate. Ophelia never forgot him! She was the daughter of the meanest, most brutal man ever. She suffered mental and physical abuse, she was broken.This story is about how these two people meet again years later. What is incredible about this particular story is the abject pain and suffering these people live through. Their childhood haunts them. Connor deals with his pain by investigating situations for the rich. Ophelia by saving youngsters from the street...but it isn't until they are both faced with the very worst that life can hand them that they are both saved. This is a story of depravity, loss, forgiveness and pure love. I believe this book is a cut above all others. A read that will tear you up a bit as you suffer along with these characters, and then bring you joy as they find happiness.

Christi Caldwell continues to amaze!Ophelia Killoran – the tough street rat with a will to survive and no love for the peerage.Connor Steele – the orphan who got away from the streets and given a better life.Their lives took different paths, but fate has thrown them together again.Ms. Caldwell puts a depth to her characters that is unparallel. The Vixen is no exception. As she peeled away the layers of Ophelia and opened Connor’s eyes to reality, my heart ached. And the prison palm reading….I BAWLED! I don’t think a scene has ever affected me as much as this one. Throw in a few surprises, extraordinary secondary characters and you have a 5+ read.I can’t wait to see how Ms. Caldwell tops this one.

If you want nice and tidy package of all the things you need to know to get ready to do great Data Science, then this is the book for you!Programming Skills for Data Science starts at the beginning of the DS journey. It takes you through the basics, careful to ensure that no tricky acronym or software 'gotcha' is left unexplained. Folks will appreciate the book's guiding hand which provides a consistent and carefully thought out introduction to all the tools and technologies you need to know. It starts with command line tools and git, making sure the reader is prepared for the more advanced stuff later in the book. I liked the inclusion on a chapter about using Markdown for documentation purposes. If you already are familiar with this markup language, its an easy thing to skim. But if you haven't used Markdown before, it is great to have it here, right in-line with the other prerequisites.The next section of the book provides a great introduction to R - a powerful and wildly popular tool for 'doing' data science. The way Mike Freeman and Joel Ross build up from simple programming concepts to advanced R features really showcase that they've been teaching this stuff for a long time - and have a system that works! I love the walkthrough of basic data types in R (which are kinda weird even if you are familiar with data types from other languages). I also appreciate the section on where one can find help. Thats one of the biggest lessons to learn when doing any programming work - its completely ok to search out answers when you get stuck. Mike and Joel provide a comprehensive list for doing just that.The main section of the book gets people comfortable with the primary tasks of a Data Scientist - wrangling and visualizing data using code. And here, Joel and Mike again show their expertise by picking the best-in-class packages for working with data in R today. Their showcasing of the 'tidyverse' of packages gets you parsing and working with data in the most direct and powerful way possible. They show you how to get started with ggplot2 for visualizing data quickly. I thought it was nice they include a quick description of the 'grammar of graphics' which is the conceptual framework ggplot2 is built from. There is even a section on making maps in R - using the same tools!The final section of the book on building and publishing data-driven reports and analyses really ties everything together. Their suggestions for building and publishing static and interactive analyses are really some of the best ways to get your work out there. I learned a lot of how to build out these interactive tools using Shiny - and make them look good too!Throughout the book I loved the writing style and the attention to detail. There are innumerable call-outs, tips, and warnings as you read. I love that they provide both Windows and Mac examples of setup and screenshots. And I love that the book comes in full color! So those graphics are easy to read and understand. I think a critique that could be leveled against this book is "well can't you find this all on the Internet?". But really, what book couldn't you say that about, these days? But it is true - there are resources out there that cover chunks of this material. You could probably amass a body of work that hit roughly the same topics. But a benefit of this book is having a single resource where all of this material is packaged for you in one handy-dandy guide, so you don't have to be constantly googling mystery words and trying to piece disparate narratives together while learning something new.This book is a great guide and a great resource for starting down the Data Science path. I have a copy and will be getting one for my friends and associates that are interested in getting started with working and analyzing data!!

I recently got this book as a supplement to my learning R in a university system since my professor was not the best teacher. I must say I'm glad I found this book. Unlike many other coding books, it starts at the very beginning such as file management, text editors, the best IDEs, and project set up. After these topics it jumps into the typical computer science stuff like variables, data types, etc. It's hard to stress how nice it is for a book to be comprehensive in its approach to learning a computer programming language. Too many books forget that its a contextual process, and it's crucial to understand everything that goes along with simply just coding scripts and functions.The book goes over how to collect and manipulate data, how to visualize data, and how to build and share your applications. It goes over so many important concepts that I've found other books lack like accessing data from databases and web APIs, and it introduces many of the essential functions used for data analysis too. As someone who was personally interested in making maps with R, there are great examples of that too.The writing is clear and concise, the examples are fantastic, and the snippets of code are extremely helpful. You can tell it was written by someone who is good at and excited by data science. If you're looking for an enjoyable, comprehensive, and practical overview of R definitely get this book.

Love these books. My son, who is 9 has been reading them for a little over a year now and this book is wonderful. I must say that this one is not one of his favorites. He is a history junkey, lol. He so far seems to love the Jackie Robinson, Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Robert E Lee, What is the world series the best as a 8 and 9 year old.I also read these to him in the evenings and I really enjoy them as a 40 year old father. I have learned so much from them as well. Sometimes I read them before or after my son in order to have an educated discussion with him about the subject of the book. I really also get alot out of them as well.

It was our first book from "Who Was" and we are very happy with this book. It gives you plenty information about the person. My daughter enjoyed reading this book. We order 4 more book :D

Full disclosure, I haven't read this myself, however my fifth grade students have and they love it. You will not find this on my classroom bookshelf because someone is always readIng it.

i like this Who Was book series idea. Will give more detailed review after reading.

While I like electronic bibles and resources, I've actually gone back to paper for my primary bible, an ESV bible with 2" margins that allows me to take tons of notes. This concordance has proven to be an invaluable resource to help when looking up things. It makes my bible study more meaningful as I don't let technology get in the way, or worse, distracted by google results for passages. No more notifications, going down rabbit holes in blogs semi-related to my search, or anything else. It just allows me to focus on God's word.

Really nice exhaustive concordance. Needed for ESV. Use it for teaching Sunday School. Easy to read format.

I've been using a NASB concordance with a NASB Bible comparing to my ESV Bible. Really glad to have the ESV "version".

Overall, I really love this Exhaustive Concordance. It is different than Strong's Concordance, but once you understand its arrangements, you will begin to appreciate it. Let me be brief:1. High Quality. It is Smyth-sewn binding with high quality Bible paper. The fonts are clear though they are small - as expected in any Exhaustive Concordance. If you are 40 years and older, you might need a reading glass.2. Different Than Typical Strong's Concordance. There is no numbering system. It is arranged with "Short Glosses" from the original with "subscript" to identify the entry. While different, it is useful. The dictionaries (or "Glossaries") in the back provide concise definition, frequency, parts of speech, and verb stems in discussing the original language.3. ESV 2016 updated words (compared to 2011) are not included in this concordance. For example, ESV (2016), on Gen. 3:16, "your desire shall be contrary to your husband" the word, "contrary" is not found. So to use this concordance, you need 2011 edition.4. The size of the concordance is similar to NASB Exhaustive Concordance (Zondervan). See the pictures.Overall, this will be a great addition to your ESV. Love the format. Highly recommended!

It is a hardback edition. The spine is sewn, and rounded for easy use, and durability. There are black head and tail bands. The paper is 36 g.s.m. and opaque. I think it was about as thin as they could go without sacrificing legibility, considering the 6.5 Lexicon font. It strikes the perfect balance for a book of this size. The paper is white, and the type is clearly, and uniformly printed. Concordances, as you can imagine are not small books. This one is a hair thinner than my Strong’s. In the front of this concordance in the introduction you’ll find helpful diagrams of how to use this tome properly, as well as a Preface by Drayton Brenner who compiled it.

I like this style of book (self-help as narrated through someone's first-hand experiences) and thought the information in it was really good. That being said, I'm knocking off 2 stars because Jancee Dunn consistently references "research" but does not consistently cite her sources. If she quotes someone from an interview, she's good about giving their name, but there are lots and lots of references to studies and research and there's absolutely no way of knowing which study she's referring to. A lot of what she quotes sounds very interesting and I'd love to read the full study but I can't. In my opinion, it's unacceptable for someone to make money off of the hard work of hundreds of researchers and academics throughout the world and not give credit where credit is due.Overall, I thought this book contains very useful information and am glad I read it, but wish Dunn had credited the people she relied upon to build her case.

This book is full of little gems of advice and insight. From division of labor in the home, raising the kids, organization, money, to sex. I found many of the author's stories relatable and humorous. I think the book, at best, gave me useful strategies I can implement in my own life, and at least, gave me validation that I'm not alone in these struggles. That other good men, good husbands out there still bring these frustrations to their marriages.I think the women who read this book and are left feeling even angrier probably have other underlying problems. Yes, the book does put the bulk of the work needed to make changes on the woman herself, which feels defeating and infuriating. But unless divorce is something you'd seriously consider, what alternative is there? It's hard to carry the burden of having to be the one to "fix" things, be the bigger person in general, and love your husband enough to take that on in spite of all your frustrations. The ones that led to the need for someone to even write this book. But I think she modeled that wonderfully and guess what... it worked for her. Her marriage, her home life, and her job as a parent are all better off. That's worth it.The book helped me understand myself, my husband, and certain dynamics of our marriage and home life. I'd recommend it to any couple about to have a baby or already struggling. Kids change your relationship in so many unpredictable ways. This book helped put it all into perspective and helped me feel more positive overall.

I have rarely laughed out loud while reading a book. And as an avid fiction reader, I didn't know that I could get on board with something more practical. But this book? It's amazing.Helped ground me and realize a) omg I'm not the only one and b) there are genius mechanisms to deal with the stress of having a partner and a baby and thank god now I have them all neatly packaged in a witty book.I've read - and reread - this book now 3 times. Highlighted parts. Flagged others.Sometimes I just turn to it for a chuckle. Sometimes I literally reference it for "how to deal with bringing up...".It's awesome.Can't say enough good things.

This book makes me feel less alone as a mother/wife. I LOVE this book. The title may sound like a negative perspective on husbands, but the actual content of the book is not bashing husbands. It fairly looks at how everyone is responsible for a happy home (still it does address some complaints I and other moms have). It has a feminist/enlightened perspective, but is not heavy handed about it. It has helpful information and good advice/strategies to try and make your post-baby home more harmonious. At the same time, the writer is very humorous and it is very readable! It is, I would say the book is mostly about heterosexual couples, as an FYI.

If this book had a different title, I wouldn’t have to hide it from my partner. Of course, it’s catchy, and many parents can relate. It is heteronormative, as she admits. The actual stories and expert advice in the book are extremely useful, accessible and readable. I highly recommend this book. I don’t hate my husband, but the stress of coparenting is real and it does change the relationship. Why not have help? At the very least it helps me feel like I’m not alone. Other parents have to work hard on their relationships too.

This book was a timely treasure during the early days of welcoming kid #2 this year. It was a poignant reminder that many of the things I feel toward my husband are A) felt by almost all women married to men B) feelings that I don't have to let take over our interactions. I have been a fountain of "how to improve your marriage" tidbits since reading this. And we no longer feel guilty about our 2 1/2 year old feeding the dog. Here's to many more books looking at such practical topics with such gracious humor and honesty. I only wish I had written it!

This book actually really helped me, and my relationship. Not something I can say for pretty much any other book I've ever read. Jancee Dunn did a ton of research (including going to some of the top couples' therapists in the country with her husband) and shares it all. I think that ever single fight my partner and I have had since our child was born was pretty much covered verbatim in this book. So I suddenly felt very much not alone anymore, and also had a roadmap for how to approach our difficulties more gently and effectively. On top of it all, Dunn is a really good, and really funny writer. I looked forward to reading this every day while nursing my child. Definitely a book to own, and refer back to. And pass along to friends. BTW, I shared some of it with my husband, too, who also found it funny, and I think probably helpful. Hopefully the title is not too off-putting in that regard-- it's really useful for happy couples struggling to adjust to the immense change of having a child.

What should one make of “the two Newtons” (19)—the mathematician and the mystic? Newton was a veritable “last of the Sumerians, a mystical restorer of esoteric pagan wisdom” (19), who spent more time “bent over a steaming crucible in search of the philosopher’s stone” (104) than he did calculating planetary orbits. It is tempting for us to ask what drove such a brilliant scientific mind to such an obsession with alchemy and the hermeneutics of ancient religious texts.But perhaps we are asking the wrong question. Perhaps the anomaly to be explained is not Newton’s mysticism but his mathematics. “Newton’s interests in alchemy, chronology, biblical prophecies and Church history … would not have seemed unusual to his contemporaries” (20). “Prestigious status [was] conferred on practitioners in such … erudite field[s]” (190). Mathematics, on the other hand, was treated with some suspicion. It was dangerously close to having “atheistic consequences” insofar as reducing the physical world to “inescapable rules” left creation “independent of the providential action of God” (40). Its claim to absolute certainty was also undesirable: “Many natural philosophers in the Royal Society wished to allay any fears that they might propose ‘unquestionable’ or ‘dogmatic’ conclusions. Politically opinionated philosophers or dogmatic theologians were not admitted in the society, which instead promoted innocuous, moderate scepticism. … Any discourse presuming to certainty was looked upon with suspicion.” (83-84)Indeed, Newton’s interest in esoteric and religious subjects seems to have been very genuine, whereas he ended up in mathematics almost involuntarily, “not due to any choice on his part but to the fact that his mind was extraordinarily equipped for mathematical inventiveness” (35).Once in mathematics, Newton let it dictate the lead in all his work to an unprecedented extent. He dismissed qualitative and philosophical modes of doing science, deriding such speculations as “no difficult matter” (88). Instead he held that “mathematical regularities deduced with certainty from phenomena” (88) were sufficient in themselves, even though this meant his science was “devoid of physical meaning” (8) in the eyes of many contemporaries. Similarly, the deeply mathematical Principia was largely “foreign … to the [Royal] Society, whose members espoused the Baconian ideal of an experimental philosophy accessible for public discussion and beneficial to human welfare” (153).“Philosophy was for Newton a necessity rather than a vocation, a defensive strategy rather than a chosen line of research.” (180) When he did engage in it, his method was to extrapolate philosophical conclusions from mathematical results. The material nature and causal structure of e.g. planetary motion should not be sought in philosophical reflections but in mathematical results. For example, gravity “operates not according to the quantity of the surfaces of the particles upon which it acts (as mechanical causes use to do) but according to the quantity of the solid matter which they contain” (210), and hence the vortex theory of planetary motion should be dismissed. Thus a metaphysical conclusion is drawn as a corollary of a mathematical result—a form of argument giving mathematics a priority over other fields that few of Newton’s contemporaries would have granted. Similarly, “Newton’s defence of absolute space and time is based on his conviction that these notions are presupposed by good scientific practice” (166), that is to say, the mathematical theory demands them and this is reason enough to postulate them—in contrast to people like Descartes and Leibniz who found this abhorrent on purely epistemological grounds.Mathematics affords religious conclusions as well. The stable trajectories of the solar system are so unlikely to have arisen by chance that they must be attributed to “an intelligent agent … very well skilled in Mechanics and Geometry” (200), who furthermore “intervenes with a ‘continuous miracle’ to stop the stars from falling … onto each other” (202).The history of ancient civilisations is another field where conventional arguments and evidence must yield to mathematics. “Newton brought to chronology methodological innovations that depended upon his expertise in natural philosophy. … [He] received sharp criticisms from the humanists …, who thought that the discipline should be founded on antiquarian and textual evidence. Newton instead resorted to a complex argument in which the hermeneutics of classical sources were mingled with astronomical calculations on the precession of the equinoxes.” (190)Newton’s somewhat elitist emphasis on mathematics as the subject to rule them all, and readiness to radically dismiss much contemporary work on the basis of this principle, fit well with his personality and beliefs.Newton was “convinced that he was part of a circle of chosen ones” (130) and had little respect for those who were not. He kept much of his work secret—an “extremely peculiar approach to the publication and promotion of his ideas” (20). Attempts to engage with others usually led to “violent dispute” (195), which Newton approached with “a fierce, polemical vehemence” (136). He was convinced most people lived in sin and delusional beliefs. He adhered to a heretical religious faith, “which, if it had become public, would have completely compromised his academic and political career” (28). “Manuscripts survive in which Newton explains the rules for maximizing concentration in research and avoiding the temptations of worldly pleasures which he the lists in … detail … bordering on the pornographic.” (34) “As far as we know, Newton remained a virgin” all his life (33).“The position of professor allowed him to devote himself to research, almost undisturbed” for much of his life (76), his teaching being “perhaps almost non-existent” (79). His misanthropic tendencies were no less marked when he became a more public figure. “During his long presidency” he ruled the Royal Society “as an absolute monarch” (187-188), for instance “forcibly” confiscating the records of the Royal Observatory when the Astronomer Royal did not collaborate to his liking (187). He took “a morbid pleasure in sending counterfeiters to the gallows” (185) when his appointment at the Mint put him in a position to do so.Newton’s dislike of his fellow man was accompanied by great respect for ancient wisdom (one is tempted to call it an “equal and opposite” force in the manner of his third law). In mathematics, he had “a critical attitude, bordering on contempt, with regard to the algebraic methods of the ‘Moderns’,” but “nothing short of veneration” for “the ‘Ancients’” (52). In religion, he was convinced that “corrupters … had ‘twisted the meaning’ of Holy Writ” (125). Combining writings from a multitude of spiritual traditions, Fox here puts into practice the idea of deep ecumenism that he has been exploring in a series of books going back to The Coming of the Cosmic Christ in 1989. To accomplish this task, Fox focuses on four categories of spiritual inquiry that he sees running like a river through all spiritual traditions: how we relate to creation, to divinity, to ourselves (this includes topics such as meditation, art, ritual, sexuality), and, finally, how we relate to the future, a section that explores issues of service and compassion, justice and spiritual warriorhood. He then concludes with "18 New Myths and Visions" that summarize his central message. Simplicity and clarity are the goals of this book. To achieve this Fox weaves his own brief commentary through a series of quotations drawn from a myriad of traditions. Fox, who broke from his Roman Catholic roots with his earlier books The Coming of the Cosmic Christ and Creation Spirituality, presents quotations from various faith traditions to introduce what he believes are the universals of every faith. The title comes from Fox's metaphor that every religious tradition is a different well that descends to a single subterranean river of spirituality. This is scarcely an original idea, but Fox has been one of its greatest popularizers, in the company of such illuminati as John Dominic Crossan and the scholars of the Jesus Seminar. Using the approach he has named "Deep Ecumenism," Fox writes about four universal areas of spirituality (relating to creation, relating to the divine, relating to ourselves and relating to the future), integrating quotations from the sacred writings and stories of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, folk religions and other traditions. Many of the selected quotations are set off by special margins, while others occur in boldface type in Fox's own running text. Concluding with "Eighteen Myths for Remythologizing our Species"Aranging from the unsurprising insight that all traditions can learn from each other to the intriguing idea that sexuality is sacredAFox continues to be an articulate presenter of the trends that he helped put in motion. One River, Many Wells. First of all, it is a truly inspired and wonderful title, and the title represents the content well. The book beautifully shares how the Infinite Lord God Almighty is not limited by any "box" someone (or some groups) might attempt to enclose Almighty Divine God, The Holy Spirit in. Diving into its contents some persons who may have sort of boxed-in their own mind, heart, spirit, and soul might be inspirited to open their hearts and allow the full infinite Grace of God flow in and THROUGH them. This of course would in turn fill them and free them to be fully used-of-God in loving service of who-ever they may come across in life.Clearly this is a beautiful and divine "putting of pen to paper" for us Interfaith Ministers and Chaplains. However, even those who may be dogmatic in thought and nature, judgmental/critical, and/or may take their own respective faith's Teachings and Scripture as black-and-white in-a-square-box literal, can have their eyes and hearts begin to open and layers of crusty-scales begin to fall.Sincerely searching the heart, surrendering in loving-service and prayer, in silent contemplation, and perhaps reflecting with open-hearted trusted fellow-beings, one may begin to see and understand that the basis, the central core, of All Faiths is Pure Selfless Love, Agape' Love, Unconditional Love... selfless Loving Service shall then unfold quite organically and naturally in the heart, mind, soul, intentions, thoughts, words, deeds, and actions of such-a-one. I heartily recommend it to one and all.

Good conglomeration of other authors and poets and their mystic, cosmic views, but I never really got to know Matthew Fox's personal views as a Catholic priest turned Episcopalian. As a Catholic, that was important to me.

This book has been an eyeopener for me. As a person living within a interfaith community I felt very open minded and somewhat educated about the different religions overall. I have been surprised at learning so many different and important ideas and view points concerning our major religions and the important individuals connected to them. Feel like a lot of my questions have been answered in a world view way.

I love the way it is formatted, with quotes from the mouths of those who practice particular faith traditions. Loove the inclusiveness.

Fascinating book, so many things I didn't know.

I enjoyed this enormously - just as much as his earlier books, "The Coming of the Cosmic Christ" and "Original Blessings."

This book has been a companion to me for daily meditation. The compilation of sacred truths from global religions is one of the hallmark of the author's presentation.

Outstanding book regarding the future of humankind as well as all creation.
